Beyond the Tourniquet: Immediate Hemorrhage Control for Crisis Response

Do you know the steps to take if you, a loved one, or bystander finds themselves in a life-threatening event? Do you have the tools necessary to potentially save someones life when they need you most? Preventable massive hemorrhaging is a leading cause of death that occurs before responders can arrive, but most of us have the ability to prevent this and change the outcome with the right training.

This course addresses the leading preventable cause of death for those who have been acutely injured. Severe bleeding, also known as Massive Hemorrhage in the Tactical Emergency Casualty Care (TECC) protocols, is one of the most time sensitive medical emergencies that requires immediate action by the injured individual, witnesses/bystanders, friends/family, and professional rescuers in order to secure favorable outcomes for the injured individual. Students will be given the confidence to reply appropriately when faced with someone suffering from severe bleeding.

This course will also cover the concepts of direct and indirect threat to ensure students maintain appropriate situational awareness in an event that causes acute traumatic injuries.

Preventing additional casualties and ensuring rescuer safety are concepts often overlooked by those not accustomed to operating in the threat based environment. Course attendees will also learn best practices when it comes to interacting with professional rescuers/first responders to ensure best possible incomes for any injured individual.

Skills and concepts covered in this course are:

  • Direct and Indirect threat medical considerations based off current professional operational guidelines.
  • Basic anatomy and physiology of the human circulatory system.
  • Immediate action to be taken to address life threatening bleeding without any medical devices.
  • How to determine what is and isn’t true significant bleeding.
  • How to choose and employ appropriate medical treatment devices to control life threatening bleeding.
  • How to recognize the difference between arterial bleeding, venous bleeding, and superficial capillary bleeding.
  • Multiple different techniques to employ low cost equipment to stop severe bleeding.
  • A review of Good Samaritan laws.
  • Hands on employment of various bleeding control techniques and devices.
  • A brief overview of shock associated with bleeding.
  • Emphasis on simple techniques for maximum return.
